About Port Medway Lighthouse
Built in 1899, the Port Medway Lighthouse is a square pyramidal wooden tower standing 8.5 meters tall. Covered with vinyl siding, it features a lantern and gallery. Though its active service ended in 1987, local groups began restoration efforts in 1988. The Queens Municipality acquired the deteriorating structure in 2000 and invested $602,000 in its refurbishment and the development of the surrounding grounds into a park. This park officially opened in October 2002.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is a cherished local landmark marking the entrance to Port Medway's harbor and serves as a focal point for community identity and tourism following its extensive restoration.
