Pointe du Sud-Ouest Lighthouse

Fl White 6s🇨🇦Anticosti Island, CAOperational

Also known as: Pointe du Sud-Ouest (Southwest Point)

Built of stone in 1831, this lighthouse stands on the south side of Île d'Anticosti in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The tower, originally 24 meters high, was painted white with two horizontal red bands and featured a lantern and gallery. It emitted a white light with a 6-second cycle. The lighthouse ceased operations in 1959. Since then, the top of the tower has collapsed, causing the lantern to fall to the ground. The structure is now in a state of deterioration.

Why it matters: The dramatic collapse of its upper section offers a unique case study in structural decay. Its current state serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of remote historical structures.
