Point Loma Lighthouse

Also known as: Point Loma (Old Point Loma)

This 14-meter cylindrical brick tower, painted white with a black lantern and red dome, was first lit in 1855. It sits atop a 1-1/2 story sandstone keeper's house, also painted white. The structure's focal height is 141 meters, offering a geographic range of nearly 29 nautical miles. Despite its height, the light was often obscured by fog, leading to its deactivation in 1891. The lighthouse was designated for demolition in 1913 but was preserved due to its inclusion in Cabrillo National Monument. Significant restorations were completed in 2003 and again between 2018 and 2019, returning it to its 1880s appearance.
