About Pilot Bay Lighthouse
Pilot Bay Lighthouse, a 7.5-meter-high wooden structure, was built in 1904. The square pyramidal frame tower is painted white with red trim and features a lantern and gallery. It sits at the end of a peninsula on the east side of Kootenay Lake, south of Kootenay Bay. The Coast Guard repaired the lighthouse in 1985 and converted it to solar power in 1989. The light was deactivated in 1993 and transferred to BC Parks in 1995. The Friends of West Kootenay Parks Society began restoration efforts, including repainting the tower in 2013.
Why it matters: This lighthouse served as a historical aid to navigation on Kootenay Lake. Community efforts continue to preserve this structure as part of Pilot Bay Provincial Park.
