Pigeon Island Lighthouse

The Pigeon Island Lighthouse is a square pyramidal steel skeletal tower with a central cylinder, lantern, and gallery, standing 15 meters tall. First lit in 1871, the current tower was built in 1909, replacing earlier structures. It is situated on a small island in the northeast corner of Lake Ontario, approximately 4 km west-southwest of Bear Point on Wolfe Island. This operational lighthouse emits a white flash every 4 seconds, with its light visible for 13.2 nautical miles. All other buildings associated with the light station have since been demolished, leaving the tower as the sole remaining structure. The island is also designated as a provincial wildlife reserve, closed to public access.

Why it matters: This lighthouse is Canada's only example of a skeletal lighthouse design, a style more common in the United States. Its light is important for safe navigation in this section of Lake Ontario.
