About Newburyport Harbor Lighthouse
Constructed in 1788, the Newburyport Harbor Light stands 13.5 meters tall with a focal height of 15 meters. This lighthouse, also referred to as Plum Island Light, emits a green light. It retains its original 4th order Fresnel lens, a rare feature as only five such original glass lenses remain in use in Massachusetts. The property is now managed by the City of Newburyport and leased to the Friends of Plum Island Light.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 15, 1987.
Background
The Newburyport Harbor Light, also known as Plum Island Light, built in 1788, is a historic lighthouse on Northern Boulevard in Newburyport, Massachusetts.
The original 4th order Fresnel lens is still in use, one of only five original glass Fresnel lenses still in use in Massachusetts.
The light is now owned by the City of Newburyport and is leased to the Friends of Plum Island Light.
