Middle Island Lighthouse

🇨🇦CAOperational

The Middle Island Lighthouse was established in 1872 as a square pyramidal wood tower attached to a keeper's house. This structure, standing 15 meters tall, marked the southernmost point of Canadian territory in Lake Erie. Though it ceased operations in 1918, the lighthouse remained standing until it burned sometime after 1955. Today, only the stone foundation and a dilapidated wood shed remain of the original buildings. The island, now managed by Parks Canada as part of Point Pelee National Park, is located 11 km east of Middle Bass Island, Ohio.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's historical presence marks the southernmost point of Canada, serving as a geographic reference in the Great Lakes. Its existence also reflects early efforts to navigate the region's shipping lanes.
