About McIntosh County Lighthouses Lighthouse
Built in 1820, this round brick lighthouse stands 20 meters tall and was originally painted with horizontal red and white bands. Its lantern and gallery are black. The tower's focal height is 23 meters, providing a geographic range of 13.8 nautical miles. It emits a white flash every 45 seconds. The structure served as a navigational aid for the entrance to Doboy Sound before becoming inactive in 1905. Its light was then moved to a skeletal tower, which was later relocated. The original lighthouse underwent restoration between 1997 and 1998 to reflect its 1890 appearance, with further work planned for its 200th anniversary in 2020.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is the nation's second-oldest brick lighthouse and the oldest surviving structure built by Winslow Lewis.
