About Margaree Island Lighthouse
Also known as: Margaree Island (Sea Wolf Island)
The Margaree Island Lighthouse stands on its namesake island, 4 kilometers offshore in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The current octagonal concrete tower, 8 meters tall, was built in 1958, continuing a history of lightkeeping that began in 1854. It is painted white, with a red lantern. The light emits a single white flash every 4 seconds from a focal height of 91 meters, providing a geographic range of 23.9 nautical miles. The island is mostly ringed by sheer cliffs, and the lighthouse is situated at its highest point. Access to the island is solely by helicopter due to the difficult coastal terrain.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is essential for maritime traffic navigating the Gulf of St. Lawrence, warning vessels away from Margaree Island. Its light ensures safe passage through a significant shipping lane.
