Mangalia Northeast Breakwater Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Mangalia Northeast Breakwater Lighthouse
This cylindrical, white masonry tower stands 7 meters tall at the end of the original northeast breakwater in Mangalia, Romania. First lit in 1897, the original light station was eventually replaced by the current round masonry structure, likely built around 1952. It displays a white light with a single flash every 4 seconds. The lighthouse became obsolete by 1979 due to significant harbor expansion, which included extending the northeast breakwater and constructing a new southeast breakwater. Despite its inactive status, the tower was refurbished and repainted in 2018.
Why it matters: The lighthouse serves as a marker of Mangalia's historical port configuration and the impact of subsequent maritime infrastructure development projects.
