About Constanţa Lighthouse
Also known as: Constanţa (Farul Genovez)
This octagonal stone tower, standing 8 meters tall, is located on a headland projecting into the Black Sea near Constanţa's downtown and the Casino. Originally built by Genoese traders around 1300, the lighthouse has been restored multiple times, including around 1860 and 1948. Although it was inactive as an official light after 1913, the tower was relighted in February 2020. The structure features a lantern and gallery, and its tower is painted black or very dark blue. The site is open to the public, though the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: The Constanţa Lighthouse is a cultural landmark symbolizing the city's maritime heritage and historical trade routes. Its reactivation in 2020, driven by volunteers, highlights its enduring significance to the community.
