The lighthouse is situated on a cape near New Waterford, marking the eastern entrance to Sydney Harbour. Automation occurred in 1988, followed by periods of vandalism affecting the keeper's house. The Low Point Lighthouse Society formed in 2014 and has since secured funding for exterior repairs and erosion control. The site is accessible to the public, though the tower remains closed.
