About Low Point Lighthouse
Also known as: Low Point (Flat Point)
The Low Point Lighthouse, established in 1938, is an octagonal concrete tower painted white, standing 22 meters tall. It emits a single white flash every 5 seconds, visible for 14.5 nautical miles. The lighthouse is situated on a cape near New Waterford, marking the eastern entrance to Sydney Harbour. Automation occurred in 1988, followed by periods of vandalism affecting the keeper's house. The Low Point Lighthouse Society formed in 2014 and has since secured funding for exterior repairs and erosion control. The site is accessible to the public, though the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse warns vessels navigating the eastern approach to Sydney Harbour and alerts them to the hazardous, erosion-threatened cape it occupies. The structure features a rare Chance Brothers circular lantern.
