About Lion's Head Harbour Lighthouse
Also known as: Lion's Head Harbour (replica 2)
The current square pyramidal wood tower, standing 8.5 meters tall and with a focal height of 8 meters, was built in 2020. It features white paint with red trim and emits an isophase red light every 4 seconds, visible for 9.7 nautical miles. The original light was established in 1903 on a pole, replaced by a square lighthouse in 1911. This structure survived being blown off its pier twice and a fire in 1933 before being replaced by a post light and demolished in 1969. A replica constructed by local students in 1983 was moved to the pier and activated after 2000. The tower was significantly damaged by storms in October 2019 and collapsed in January 2020, leading to the current rebuild completed by October 2020.
Why it matters: The lighthouse guides local mariners and recreational boaters into Lion's Head Harbour and its repeated rebuilds demonstrate the community's commitment to maritime heritage and safe passage.
