Lavaltrie Range Rear Lighthouse

This square pyramidal skeletal tower, standing 18 meters tall, was built in 1915 and first lit the same year. It is situated on a small islet near the south end of l'Île Hervieux in Quebec. The structure features a white watch room and lantern, topped with a red lantern roof, and displays an orange-red daymark with a black vertical stripe. Its light is green with a single flash every 6 seconds. The tower's design includes a gallery and an enclosed watch room. The site is open to visitors, though the tower itself is closed.

Why it matters: This range rear light is indispensable for safe passage along the St. Lawrence River, providing critical directional guidance for ships navigating the channel near l'Île Hervieux. Architecturally, it holds particular significance as a rare surviving example of a square pyramidal skeletal tower, a design that has largely vanished from the Canadian landscape.
