Langara Point Lighthouse

Established in 1913, Langara Point Lighthouse is situated at the northern extremity of Langara Island, defining the southern edge of the Dixon Entrance. This hexagonal concrete tower, standing 7.5 meters tall, has a focal height of 49 meters and emits a white flash every 5 seconds. The lighthouse is equipped with a 1st order Chance Brothers Fresnel lens, which remains in active use and is the only one of its dimension still operational in Canada. The structure features a ribbed concrete tower with a lantern and gallery, painted white, while the lantern itself is red. The operational site is open to visitors, although the tower remains closed to the public.

Why it matters: The lighthouse is indispensable for safe passage through the Dixon Entrance, a key shipping route at the northern extreme of the Haida Gwaii. Its unique 1st order Chance Brothers Fresnel lens represents a significant piece of maritime engineering heritage as the only one of its size still active in Canada.
