Kenosha County Lighthouses Lighthouse

🇺🇸Kenosha, USOperational

The Kenosha lighthouse is a 16-meter round brick tower built in 1866, featuring a replica lantern painted black and an attached two-story brick keeper's house. The original structure was established in 1848, but the first two towers, built in 1848 and 1858, were demolished due to soft bricks. The current lighthouse ceased official operation in 1906, though the keeper's house remained in use until about 1940. Threatened with demolition in 1955, the lighthouse was transferred to the City of Kenosha. A replica lantern was installed in 1994, and restoration of the keeper's house began in 2005, with its first floor opening as a museum in 2010.

Why it matters: This lighthouse is significant as an example of community-led preservation, having been saved from demolition by local advocacy. It now serves as a museum offering a connection to Kenosha's maritime history.
