About Kalholmen Lighthouse
This square skeletal tower, standing 10 meters tall, is located on the north point of Kalholmen island, approximately 1.8 km west of Sula in the Frøya municipality. Its upper section is enclosed with siding, topped by a lantern and gallery. The lighthouse emits an occulting white, red, or green light, with two flashes every 8 seconds, indicating the direction of safe passage. Its focal height reaches 17 meters, providing a geographic range of 12.4 nautical miles. The site is accessible to the public, although the tower itself remains closed. Kalholmen lighthouse was removed from the Admiralty list in March 2022 but is still maintained.
Why it matters: Its directional light provides precise guidance for vessels navigating the channels and approaches west of Sula.
