Hope Island Lighthouse

🇨🇦CAOperational

Also known as: #Hope Island

A square pyramidal wood tower, 11 meters in height, was constructed in 1884 on the northeast point of Hope Island in southeastern Georgian Bay. The structure, painted white, featured a gallery and was attached to a 1-1/2 story keeper's quarters. This lighthouse served as a navigational aid for nearly a century before becoming inactive in the 1970s. Following its period of service, attempts were made to preserve the lighthouse, including volunteers replacing its wood siding in 2003. Despite plans for a more extensive restoration in 2008, these efforts did not proceed, and the lighthouse was eventually demolished in 2017.

Why it matters: The lighthouse marked waters in southeastern Georgian Bay for almost 100 years. Its history also reflects community efforts to preserve maritime heritage.
