About Homer Spit Lighthouse
This octagonal wood-shingled tower, standing 8 meters tall, is painted gray with a red lantern. Its focal height reaches 10.5 meters, casting a green light with a characteristic of a single flash every 6 seconds. The lighthouse is mounted atop a two-story motel at the extreme end of Homer Spit, a 4.5-mile gravel bar extending into Kachemak Bay. The structure, which is 8 meters high, suffered damage from the 1964 Cook Inlet earthquake and tsunami. The light is now displayed from a short post on the lantern roof. The site is open to the public, but the tower is closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks the entrance to Kachemak Bay, a waterway used by fishing fleets, ferries, and recreational boats.
