About Hirsholm Lighthouse
Also known as: Hirsholm (Hirtsholm)
Built of brick in 1838, this square lighthouse on Hirsholm island stands 10 meters tall. The structure consists of a square cylindrical brick tower with a lantern, attached to a one-and-a-half-story keeper's house. It features a yellow tower with white trim, and a black lantern with a red roof. After operating for nearly 50 years, its light was extinguished in 1886. The building has since been repurposed as an office for Hirsholm Vandværk. Although the tower is closed to the public, the site remains accessible.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's adaptive reuse as an office for the local water company highlights its continued practical value to the island's infrastructure, long after its light was extinguished. Its presence alongside an active lighthouse offers a visual narrative of the evolution of navigational technology.
