Hellskoltan Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Hellskoltan Lighthouse
Hellskoltan was a skeletal steel lighthouse constructed as a lantern and gallery supported by tripod piles. Standing 5 meters tall, it featured a white tower topped with a red roof. This structure served mariners on the east side of the Kvalsund, near the Kvalsund Tunnel and the city of Tromsø. Although its exact construction date is unknown, it operated as a navigational aid. The lighthouse was eventually removed and is no longer visible on satellite views, with its function now covered by two nearby lights.
Why it matters: Its removal and replacement by two modern lights demonstrate the ongoing evolution of maritime safety infrastructure and technology in response to changing navigational needs.
