About Gosnold Monument Lighthouse
Gosnold Monument, formerly known as Cuttyhunk Light, was situated at the western end of Cuttyhunk Island in southeastern Massachusetts. The original lighthouse was established in 1823 and underwent several rebuilds. The final tower, constructed in 1891, stood 45 feet tall and housed a 5th order Fresnel lens. This structure suffered significant damage during the Great Atlantic Hurricane of 1944 and was subsequently dismantled in 1947. A skeleton tower replaced it but was discontinued in 2005. The only remaining structure from the original station is a stone oil house, now missing its door and roof.
Why it matters: A stone oil house is the sole remaining element from the original lighthouse station.
