Geitungen Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Geitungen Lighthouse
Geitungen Lighthouse stands on a small island approximately 1 km offshore from Karmøy's southern tip. Constructed in 1924, the octagonal cylindrical masonry tower reaches a height of 11 meters, with its light situated 41 meters above sea level. The structure includes an attached U-shaped keeper's house. Its light emits white, red, and green signals, with two white flashes every 6 seconds. This facility was automated in 1994 and subsequently renovated to provide overnight accommodations. Access to the island is exclusively by boat.
Why it matters: Built to address complaints that the Kvitsøy lighthouse was too far east, Geitungen provides a critical landfall light for vessels approaching Stavanger.
