About Gammel-Pøl Lighthouse
Also known as: Polshuk
The Gammel-Pøl lighthouse, also known as Polshuk, is a 10-meter cylindrical cast iron tower built in 1906. It is painted white with a single red horizontal band and features a lantern and gallery. The light emits three white, green, or red flashes every 15 seconds. Originally serving as the front light of a range, it was converted in 1975 to operate as a directional light. The structure was prefabricated by the German firm Julius Pintsch. The site is open to the public, but the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for safe navigation around the southeastern tip of Als and provides precise guidance with its directional light. It also represents an example of prefabricated cast iron tower construction from the early 20th century.
