Built in 1907, the Gallia Bay Lower Range Rear Lighthouse is a 21-meter-tall cylindrical steel tower set on a square concrete pier. It is located on the south side of Île Lapierre, approximately 7 kilometers northeast of Sainte-Anne-de-Sorel. This structure served as the rear marker for a navigational range, helping vessels align for safe passage. The lighthouse has been inactive since the 1960s, and its front light has been removed. The tower is now deteriorating and is considered endangered. While the site is accessible to the public, the tower itself remains closed.
Why it matters: This lighthouse was part of a range system, essential for guiding vessels through a specific channel in the St. Lawrence River system, and is now considered a piece of Canada's maritime heritage.
