Freines Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Freines Lighthouse
This octagonal fiberglass tower stands 6 meters tall and is painted white with two black horizontal bands, topped by a red lantern roof. Its focal height is also 6 meters, providing a geographic range of 8.9 nautical miles. The light emits two occultations every 8 seconds, with colors shifting between white, red, and green to indicate safe channels. The current structure replaced an earlier, smaller wooden tower. It is located at the southern end of Frei, overlooking the Freifjord, near Kristiansund.
Why it matters: The lighthouse's directional light is key for safe passage within the Freifjord, guiding vessels through its channels. The transition from a wooden tower to fiberglass demonstrates the adaptation of maritime safety infrastructure.
