About Fængskjær Lighthouse
Also known as: #Fængskjær
This navigational aid is an octagonal lantern structure painted white with a red roof, mounted on four straight piles. It marks a very narrow passage east of Ytre Sula, within the inside waterway. The original light was replaced by a simpler post light. The site is accessible to visitors by boat, though the tower is closed to the public. Its purpose was to guide vessels through a challenging section of the Norwegian coast.
Why it matters: Fængskjær's presence was essential for safe passage through a critical choke point in the inside waterway, directly reducing the hazards of this constricted channel for local and fishing vessels.
