Fish Island Lighthouse

🇨🇦Malpeque, CAOperational

Also known as: Fish Island (Malpeque Outer Range Front, Billhook Island Range Front) (relocated to Cabot Beach)

The Fish Island Lighthouse is a square pyramidal wood tower standing 7 meters tall. Originally established in 1876, the current structure was built in 1961. Severe beach erosion in 1989 threatened the lighthouse's existence, leading to the demolition of its attached keeper's house. The tower was then cut into two sections and airlifted by Canadian Forces helicopter to Cabot Beach Provincial Park. It was reassembled and restored at its new location. In the late 1990s, the lighthouse served as a set piece for the CBC television series Emily of New Moon. The site is open to the public, but the tower is closed.

Why it matters: This lighthouse demonstrates significant community effort in its preservation and relocation from erosion. It also holds cultural significance as a former filming location.
