Escarpement Bagot Lighthouse

Also known as: Escarpement Bagot (Bagot Bluff)

The Escarpement Bagot lighthouse, a pyramidal concrete structure standing 25 meters tall, was built in 1912 near Pointe du Sud on Île d'Anticosti's southeastern coast. It featured flying buttresses, though its lantern has since been removed. The station was established in 1871, with this tower replacing an earlier wooden one. The lighthouse became inactive in 1980, and the keeper's houses were demolished in 1989. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's unique pyramidal concrete design with flying buttresses makes it architecturally distinct. Its inactive status and the demolition of its associated buildings highlight challenges in preserving remote maritime heritage.
