Elgin County Lighthouses Lighthouse

🇨🇦Bayham, CAOperational

This octagonal wooden tower, built in 1840, stands on the waterfront in Port Burwell. Painted white with red trim, its lantern and gallery are also red. The lighthouse served as an active aid to navigation until 1962. Following its deactivation, the Village of Port Burwell took ownership in 1965. A significant restoration by Mennonite craftspeople in 1986 led to a relighting ceremony in 1987. The lighthouse was closed in January 2023 due to structural issues, prompting emergency stabilization measures.

Why it matters: The lighthouse retains its original 3rd order Fresnel lens, providing a rare example of historical optical technology. Its status as a cherished local landmark is underscored by ongoing community efforts to ensure its preservation and future.
