Dua Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Dua Lighthouse
This concrete lighthouse stands 14 meters tall on a skerry off the east side of the Karmsund, northeast of Kopervik. The cylindrical tower is attached to a 1-1/2 story keeper's house. Its light displays white, red, or green, with an occulting characteristic that changes color every 6 seconds. The focal height of the light is 5 meters, and the geographic range is 8.4 nautical miles. The site is open to the public, but the tower itself is closed. It is located approximately 1 kilometer from Karmoy.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is indispensable for safe passage through the Karmsund, a critical shipping lane for local and commercial traffic. Its directional light system guides vessels around the skerry it occupies, preventing groundings in an area with numerous small islands and narrow channels.
