Crooked River Lighthouse

Fl (2) W 15s🇺🇸Western Florida, USInactive

The Crooked River Light, also identified as the Carrabelle Light, was constructed in 1895. This yellow tower stands 30.5 meters tall with a focal height of 35 meters. Its geographic range extended to 35 nautical miles. The light emitted a white flash. Although now deactivated, this structure was originally built to succeed the Dog Island Light, which was lost in a hurricane.

Why it matters: Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this light served as the rear range marker for the channel west of Dog Island, a route significant for lumber trade vessels.

Background
The Crooked River Light, also known as the Carrabelle Light, was built in 1895 to replace the Dog Island Light on Dog Island, which had been destroyed in 1875 by a hurricane. The location on the mainland allowed the light to serve as the rear range light for the channel to the west of Dog Island, used by ships in the lumber trade.
