Coffin Island Lighthouse

Fl White 4s🇨🇦Beach Meadows, CAOperational

Also known as: Coffin Island (Liverpool)

A 16-meter cylindrical fiberglass tower painted white stands at the southeast point of Coffin Island, marking the entrance to Liverpool Harbour. The current structure, built in 2006, replaced a lighthouse that had been endangered by beach erosion. The original station was established in 1815. The 1914 lighthouse, which had been scheduled for demolition in 1998, was ultimately torn down in 2006 due to coastal erosion. A shore protection project undertaken in an effort to save the earlier structure was unsuccessful. The light emits a white flash every 4 seconds, with a focal height of 18.5 meters, providing a geographic range of 12.8 nautical miles.

Why it matters: The current light ensures continued safe navigation into Liverpool Harbour, guiding vessels past the island's southeast point. Its history reflects the challenges of coastal erosion and community efforts to preserve earlier navigational aids.
