Chowan County Lighthouse Lighthouse

🇺🇸Plymouth, USOperational

Built in 1887, the Chowan County Lighthouse originally stood near the mouth of the Roanoke River in Albemarle Sound. This square cylindrical wood tower, standing 11 meters tall, included a lantern and gallery atop a two-story keeper's house. It ceased operations in 1941. The lighthouse was moved to Edenton in 1955 and later became a private residence. After falling into disrepair, preservation efforts led to its acquisition by the Edenton Historical Commission in 2007. It was relocated to Colonial Park on the Edenton waterfront and underwent exterior restoration.

Why it matters: The lighthouse's multiple relocations and the community-led restoration efforts highlight its unique cultural significance as a tangible link to the region's maritime past.
