About Camden County Lighthouses Lighthouse
This brick lighthouse on the north end of Little Cumberland Island was constructed in 1838. The 18-meter round tower is painted white and functions as a charted daybeacon, though it also displays a decorative light. The original lighthouse station buildings were demolished in 1968. The tower itself was renovated between 1994 and 1998. Active service as a navigational aid ceased in 1915. Since 2014, rapid beach erosion has become a significant concern for the structure.
Why it matters: Its inclusion on the Lighthouse Digest Doomsday List in 2015 highlights the threats posed by coastal erosion to historic maritime structures.
