About Camden and Rockland Area Lighthouses Lighthouse
This 7.5-meter round cylindrical brick tower, built in 1896, stands on an island at the entrance to Camden Harbor. Painted white with a black lantern and gallery, its focal height reaches 16 meters. The light emits an occluded green flash every 4 seconds, visible for 12.2 nautical miles. The station was first established in 1835, with the island itself renamed in 1934. Automation occurred in 1972, and the town acquired the station that same year, with the lighthouse transferred to municipal ownership in 1998. The site is open to the public, though the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: The lighthouse is essential for safe navigation into Camden Harbor, a key gateway for recreational boats, fishing vessels, and ferries.
