About Bulkhead Bar Range Rear Lighthouse

Built in 1929, this 11.89m square pyramidal skeletal tower made of steel is painted black. It served to guide northbound vessels making a transition between the New Castle Range and the Deepwater Point Range at the junction of 8th Street and Young Street. The original tower was taken down in late 2015 or early 2016. The former front light from this range was afterward adapted for use as the rear light.

Why it matters: The light offered exact alignment for vessels changing course between two navigational ranges, supporting safe transit through a main shipping channel close to New Castle.
