About Brier Island Lighthouse
Also known as: Brier Island (Western Point)
This octagonal concrete tower, standing 18 meters high with a focal height of 29 meters, displays horizontal red and white bands and was built in 1944. The light emits a single white flash every 18 seconds, visible for 15.1 nautical miles. Originally established in 1809, the first wooden lighthouse was rebuilt around 1830 and later destroyed by fire in 1944, leading to the current structure's construction. The lighthouse is situated at the westernmost point of Brier Island, Nova Scotia, marking a severe tide rip at the southern entrance to the Bay of Fundy. The site is open to the public, although the tower remains closed.
Why it matters: Designated a Heritage Lighthouse in 2021, this structure marks a severe tide rip at the southern entrance to the Bay of Fundy, a significant navigational hazard.
