About Bridgeport and Fairfield Lighthouses Lighthouse
This 9.5-meter round cast iron tower, painted black, was constructed in 1895 and first lit that same year. It stands at Tongue Point, guiding vessels into Bridgeport Harbor and the Pequonnock River estuary. The lighthouse emits a single green flash every 4 seconds, with a geographic range of 10.2 nautical miles. In 1919, the structure was moved when the nearby breakwater was shortened. The lighthouse has been involved in a transfer process under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, being offered in 2004, withdrawn in 2007 due to security concerns, and made available again in 2019 when the City of Bridgeport expressed interest in its ownership.
Why it matters: The lighthouse marks the entrance to Bridgeport Harbor, a critical point for commercial and ferry traffic.
