Borden Wharf Lighthouse

🇨🇦Canning, CAOperational

Also known as: Borden Wharf (Bordens Wharf, Canning) (relocated)

Built in 1904, the Borden Wharf Lighthouse is a square pyramidal wood tower, 6 meters tall, painted white with red trim. It originally served the Habitant River near Canning, Nova Scotia. The lighthouse ceased active operation in the early 1930s. After its decommissioning, the structure was sold and repurposed several times, including use as a pigsty and a toolshed. In 1990, the Village of Canning acquired the tower and converted it into an information center. It was later transferred to the Fieldwood Heritage Society for restoration and was relit with a decorative light in 2004.

Why it matters: The Borden Wharf Lighthouse is a notable example of community-led heritage preservation, illustrating the rescue and restoration of a former navigational aid into a local landmark and information center.
