Belfast Beacon Lighthouse

🇺🇸Islesboro, USOperational

Also known as: Belfast Beacon (Steele Ledge, Steels Ledge)

The Belfast Beacon is a 4.5-meter stone pyramid located on a shoal at the entrance to Belfast Harbor. Constructed in 1912, it is topped by the remaining stump of a former round lantern. This structure represents the fourth navigational aid established at this site, with the first dating back to 1826. For many years, the beacon guided vessels into the port, but its active service concluded, and its light was moved to a bell buoy. The beacon is now inactive and only accessible by boat.

Why it matters: Its unique pyramidal stone construction distinguishes it from more common tower designs. The beacon remains a historical marker representing a long lineage of navigational aids at this harbor approach.
