AIS transponders broadcast position every 2 seconds when underway at high speed and up to every 3 minutes at anchor. The position you see refreshes whenever the ship is in range of a coastal AIS receiver or a satellite pass — typically seconds in coastal waters and minutes offshore.

The vessel's design class is inferred from its dimensions, gross tonnage and dead weight, all of which are listed in the Identity and Specifications panels on the vessel page.
