A fire broke out on the Indonesian cargo ship KM Legenda Nusantara in the early hours of September 1, off the waters between Selayar and Kabaena islands in Bombana regency, Southeast Sulawesi. Two crew members died. The ship, which had left Jakarta bound for Morowali carrying chemicals and heavy equipment, sank after the blaze took hold.
Officials said strong waves had shifted the cargo at sea, causing a chemical tank to rupture. Fire followed quickly. Thirteen people were on board.
Seven crew members were unharmed. Four were taken to hospital. The captain suffered serious chemical poisoning and was reported in critical condition in the immediate aftermath.
The dead were identified as Yudi Bagus, 22, who died en route to shore, and John Petro, 42, a second officer on board. Chemical cargo leaked into the surrounding water as the ship went down.
