Tanker Struck Near Al Jubail Off Saudi Arabia’s Gulf Coast
AI illustrationA tanker was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade roughly 68 nautical miles northeast of Al Jubail on Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast on Friday, October 16. All crew were safely evacuated.
UKMTO issued a first advisory after the strike. A second report confirmed the weapon was an RPG fired from a small boat, which hit the tanker's aft port quarter, Arab News reported.
Vanguard, a maritime security firm, identified the tanker as the Safeen Principal, a Marshall Islands-flagged crude oil tanker that lost power after an engine-room fire, the Oman Observer reported. No group has claimed responsibility.
The attack took the conflict's reach into the deeper Gulf. Earlier this month, the chemical tanker Acers was struck by multiple projectiles roughly 51 nautical miles north of Madinat ash Shamal, Qatar. Days before, Iran's IRGC struck six ships at Hormuz in a single day, setting a war record.
