Portuguese authorities stopped the Maersk Nokwanda in the Atlantic in early August 2026 and seized five tonnes of cocaine.

The ship is a Hong Kong-flagged container ship operated by Maersk. Police diverted it to Sines, on Portugal's Atlantic coast.

Three people were arrested. Two were stowaways: one Italian national and one Colombian. The third was an Indian crew member.

Portugal's Judicial Police conducted the operation.
