Indonesia Arrests Three Virgo Karya Shipping Executives

Indonesian police arrested three executives of PT Virgo Karya Shipping on October 8, widening the criminal case after the Virgo Transport 8 ferry capsized in the Java Sea and killed more than 80 people.

The company's agent, its operations manager, and the general manager of its Surabaya branch have been detained. All three face allegations of negligence, complicity, and aiding and abetting. The ferry's captain was arrested around October 1 on similar grounds.

The Virgo Transport 8 sank on September 13 after leaving Surabaya for Borneo, carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew. At least 80 have been confirmed dead. Search operations have wound down with dozens of victims still unaccounted for.

Investigators differ sharply from the company's initial account. Before the arrests, the company's general manager said the accident was likely caused by bad weather in the Java Sea. Police spokespersons said the suspects are believed to have knowingly allowed an unseaworthy ferry to depart. The captain faces up to ten years in prison if convicted under Indonesia's shipping law.

Four. That is the total number of people now in custody over the disaster: the captain and three company executives, all detained at a South Kalimantan regional police facility.

Holding company executives alongside a vessel's captain is a rare step in Indonesian maritime accountability. President Prabowo Subianto ordered a full investigation in the days after the sinking, under pressure from the victims' families. The October 8 arrests appear to be a direct result of that order.
