An explosion hit the bulk carrier Christiana B in the early hours of July 24, while the ship was crossing Romania's exclusive economic zone about 22 nautical miles from the Danube delta coast. The blast struck near cargo hold No. 6. No crew were injured.
The Liberian-flagged Christiana B had taken on American coal in Norfolk, Virginia, and was headed for Ukraine. The captain did not call for an evacuation.
Romanian investigators have not established the cause. A naval mine or a maritime drone strike is under consideration. Romania's military scrambled F-16 jets during the same overnight period; one intercepted and shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace, a NATO member's territory.
Romania's president confirmed both incidents in an official statement.
The Black Sea has become a live hazard zone for merchant traffic since 2022. Sea drones and drifting mines have both damaged ships in the area. A separate incident in the same waters three days earlier left an LPG tanker on fire and killed one crew member.
