A fire broke out aboard the Norwegian chemical tanker Stolt Magnesium after an explosion hit the ship off Oman in the early hours of Tuesday.
UK maritime authorities reported the ship was struck on its starboard side at around 12:40 a.m. local time, about 40 nautical miles northeast of Qalhat. Stolt-Nielsen, the ship's manager, described the blast as caused by an unidentified external device. Fire spread to the engine room.
All crew were safe. They began fighting the blaze immediately after the explosion.
The Stolt Magnesium was traveling through the Arabian Sea when it was struck. The incident came hours after Iranian cruise missiles hit two UAE crude tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, killing one crew member and injuring eight others.
