De naam wordt ook wel gebruikt als verkorting van Hardinxveld-Giessendam, als verkorting van Neder-Hardinxveld of als verzamelnaam voor Neder-Hardinxveld en Boven-Hardinxveld. De plaats werd in de 17de eeuw ook Hartogsveld genoemd.
