Svörtuloft Lighthouse
Location & Light Range
About Svörtuloft Lighthouse
A cylindrical concrete tower, 12 meters tall, was erected in 1931 to mark the western end of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The structure, painted yellow with a red lantern, stands 30 meters above sea level. This light station was established in 1914, with the current tower replacing an earlier installation. It emits a white flash every 10 seconds, visible for 15.3 nautical miles. Svörtuloft is located about 8 kilometers southwest of Hellissandur, near the port of Rif.
Why it matters: This lighthouse is important for guiding maritime traffic around the exposed, rocky headland of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, a critical point on Iceland's western coast.
